Otoplasty

Otoplasty, or external ear surgery is commonly done to set prominent ears back closer to the head to correct the protruding look.  This type of surgery is normally done in children since the ears are nearly fully grown by the first grade.  Treating the ears before or early on in the school years helps to reduce any teasing or ridicule the child may receive.  Occasionally, an adult may request this procedure especially with today’s shorter hairstyles.

The risks associated with otoplasty are relatively few and not very common.  Bleeding, wound infection or cartilage infection are rare.  The surgery involves, normally, making an incision in the back of the ear and exposing the underlying ear cartilage.  This cartilage is then re-shaped and often sutured to restore the natural bend to the cartilage.  Surgery usually takes about 2 hours and in children requires a general anesthesia.  After surgery, a plastic ear protector is applied to cover each ear.  These are worn for about 5 days continuously then nightly for about 2 weeks.  Pain is not usually severe but pain medicine will be given.  Dr. Topol uses dissolving sutures so they don’t need to be removed.
