Breast Lift

Breast lift or Mastopexy is a surgical procedure done to improve the shape of the breast.  Breast droop (ptosis) occurs as a result of multiple factors such as genetics, weight loss, time gravity and pregnancy.  In general, mastopexy works best on smaller breasts.  Often larger breasts require some degree of reduction as well.  Some lifts also require augmentation to add volume to obtain a better shape after the lift.  Dr. Topol will review this with you if it is an option.  If you are planning pregnancy in the near future, you may wish to delay surgery until after the pregnancy.

Mastopexy can be done using a variety of techniques involving relatively small scars in various patterns.  It all depends on your current breast shape.  Dr. Topol will show you pictures of the scars that will result from the technique best suited for your anatomy.  The scars are around the areola and may also extend below the areola to the lower breast.  In a bathing suit or similar low cut clothing, the scars will be hidden.    The major risks involve the scar pattern, poor healing of the scars, and decreased sensation to the nipple.  Long term, the breast begins to settle between 6 months and 2 years.  How much “settling” depends on the size of the breast and the quality of your breast skin.  Skin with more stretch marks tends to result in more settling but still the final result will normally be much improved over the pre-operative shape.

Surgery normally lasts about 11/2 to 2 hours.  General anesthesia is used and patients go home after surgery.  Pain requiring medication lasts 2 to 7 days.  Usually you can return to work in about a week and full physical activity in about a month.

Dr. Topol will normally see you for an initial consultation and again for a second visit which is at no charge.  During that time, he will show you photos and review in detail the risks and complications possible.  If  you are interested in mastopexy or have questions please give us a call or send an e-mail.
